This week we will discuss the importance of Data Accuracy. Every company should have a data governance
plan in place to ensure the accuracy of the data entered into the system. Data governance embodies a convergence of data quality, data
management, data policies, business process management, and risk management
surrounding the handling of data in an organization. A sound data governance program
includes a governing body or council, a defined set of procedures, and a plan
to execute those procedures. A policy should be developed that specifies who is
accountable for various portions or aspects of the data, including its
accuracy.
8. Data Accuracy
Importance of Data Accuracy:
Data is the heart of ERP systems. So if you implement a system that uses poor
data, you will truly understand the old adage “Garbage In. Garbage Out.”
Why it matters: Many
organizations hit a wall with their implementation and system startup, because
it is the first time they realize that they don’t have good data or it’s poorly
organized.
ERP systems are highly integrated. Multiple departments must share
responsibility in maintaining the data. You will need five things to ensure
sustainable data governance:
- Clearly-defied roles for the users
- Operating guidelines to ensure data entry is complete, accurate and timely
- Person(s) responsible for auditing the data on an ongoing basis
- Established measures to assess the quality of all data
- A user community trained and motivated to keep it that way
TIP: During your implementation conduct assessments of your data and
find out how much work is involved to get it organized. Go through multiple
iterations of data conversions to make sure the testing environment has data that
closely matches with the data you are going to have in the production
environment.
