In our 10
Key Success Factors series we shared the importance of management
commitment and benefit realization. This week we expand on the
Implementation Team and who has a seat at the table. Not having the correct team of people can
cause delays, ineffectiveness or possible failure; all of which can be costly
to the company.
3. Implementation
Team
Who is at the Table:
An implementation team should be comprised of the best resources from within
the company along with knowledgeable and experienced outside consultants.
Why it Matters:
Not having the correct people on the team will cause delays, resistance to
change and diminish the benefits. From the
very beginning, Implementation needs to involve the Business Process Owner
(BPO's) and Subject Matter Experts (SME's) from every department. These are the
people who know “how things are done today” and will be able to envision “how
we can better operate tomorrow”.
Ideally, the internal resources should have their daily responsibilities
off-loaded to others during the implementation period so they can be fully
committed. The SME's will be the
“super-users” of the system during the implementation and become the onsite
“tech support” after the product goes live.
In addition to the ERP product consultant, it can also be
advantageous for businesses to engage external trusted advisors to manage and
lead the process. These team members bring a unique perspective because they
are not “in” the business on a daily basis.
